Trimming Your Baby's Nails
53
When cutting your little one's nails for the first time. It can be a bit overwhelming. Keeping nails short is important to your baby's health. Because babies lack muscle control they can easily scratch or cut their delicate skin. Just by waving their hands and feet. It's also important to keep babies nails trimmed once they start to play with other children. Some parents find it easily to trim baby's nails with their partner. One person can hold the baby from squirming while the other one trims the nails. Find a good position that allows you to have easy access to your baby's hands. you could try placing baby on your lap or even wait til your baby goes to sleep to do it. Hold your baby's palm and finger steady with one hand then cut with the other. You should use a baby size nail cutter not an adult size one. Many baby nail care kits should come with a nail file or even an emery board. Remember if you keep the nails cut and short enough make sure to keep the nail edges rounded.
If you accidentally draw blood ( a common thing with fussy or fidgeting babies) don't worry. Using a gauze pad gently apply pressure to stop the bleeding. Don't put a bandage around the cut. because baby's will put their fingers in their mouth and bandage may come off and cause the baby to choke on it.
Babies nails tend to grow fast from infancy to being a toddler they may need to have their nails trimmed as often as once a week. Some newborns may need their nails trimmed even more often then that for the first few weeks of life.
